Before young hunters can buy their first hunting weapon, a gun safe must first be acquired.
Due to legal regulations, only the new acquisition of a gun cabinet of protection classes 0 or 1 is permitted, whereby we recommend acquiring the higher protection class 1, as the price difference is usually negligible.
The higher the protection class, the higher the resistance level of the cabinet.
For lower protection classes than 0 and 1, the presence of a lockable compartment for ammunition is required; this condition is waived from protection class 0, so ammunition and weapons may be stored together. Long guns may be stored in a gun safe of protection class 0 or higher in unlimited numbers, while handguns may be stored up to five, provided the safe weighs less than 200 kg. If the weight exceeds 200 kg, up to 10 handguns may be stored in the safe.
Older gun cabinet models that are already in use are protected by grandfathering - they do not need to be replaced by new safes. One may also store newly acquired weapons in their old cabinet. However, if the cabinet is full, a safe of level 0 or 1 must be purchased when acquiring another weapon.
For cabinets with grandfathering, established storage capacities apply:
A-cabinet: 10 long guns
B-cabinet: unlimited long guns, 5 handguns (up to 200 kg)/ 10 handguns (over 200 kg or anchored).
Gun cabinets are offered with a key and with a combination lock. The advantage of a combination lock is that the key cannot be lost, and especially that with a key, it must always be carried. A combination lock thus allows for a significantly more straightforward and yet reliable access to the protected weapons.
Ammunition Cabinet
For the storage of licensed ammunition alone, a steel cabinet (or sheet metal cabinet) with a swivel bolt lock is sufficient.
Since the presence of a cabinet is a prerequisite for acquiring the first and any further weapon, it is part of the basic equipment for young hunters.
New gun cabinets are available from a price of about 500 euros.
Our tip: Most hunters own more than 5 long guns - with ammunition in various loadings (lead-free, lead-containing, full metal jacket, screen ammo, etc.), the cabinet fills up faster than one thinks - it is therefore advisable not to invest in the smallest model for storage.
