A muzzle brake is a device at the muzzle of the barrel that serves to reduce recoil. To do this, the gases exiting the barrel after the projectile hit so-called impact surfaces. The gas pressure thus accelerates the weapon away from the shooter, counteracting the recoil. In addition, the exiting gases are partially redirected backward, further reducing recoil. A disadvantage of muzzle brakes is that the gunshot noise becomes louder for the shooter due to the gas pressure reflected backward. An alternative to muzzle brakes are suppressors, as they also reduce recoil.
