In hunter's language, stalking is the careful and cautious walking on the hunting ground in order to observe or hunt game.
In order not to be discovered by the game, the hunter must move as inconspicuously and quietly as possible, whereby it is advantageous if the stalking paths have been prepared in advance so that one can move silently there. Rustling leaves or cracking branches should therefore be eliminated in advance.
In order to be able to take a safe shot if huntable game is in sight, a stalking stick can be a great help, because the rifle can be laid down on it or at least painted on the stick.
The ideal weapons for stalking are light, leadable break-barrel rifles or combined weapons such as shotgun rifles or triplets, because the right cartridge can be fired for each type of game. Repeaters are less suitable for stalking.
A well-trained pointing dog can increase the chance of hunting success when stalking.
