In hunting terminology, "Pirschen" refers to the mindful and cautious traversing of the territory to observe or hunt game.
To avoid being detected by the game, the hunter must move as inconspicuously and quietly as possible, and it is advantageous if the stalking paths have been prepared in advance to allow for silent movement. Rustling leaves or cracking branches should therefore be eliminated beforehand.
To ensure a safe shot can be taken if game is in sight, a stalking stick can be a great help, as the rifle can be rested on it or at least braced against it.
Ideal weapons for stalking are lightweight, maneuverable break-action rifles or combination guns like double-barreled shotguns or drilling guns, as the right cartridge can be fired for each type of game. Repeating rifles are less suitable for stalking.
A well-trained pointing dog can increase the chances of hunting success while stalking.
