With hole stocks, the pistol grip is steeper than with conventional stocks. This allows for a relaxed stance in a natural hand position on the trigger. Due to the thumb's passage, the thumb joint is in the same position with every shot, making the stance repeatable. The position of the trigger finger, parallel to the barrel, also leads to a safe and relaxed trigger pull.

Thus, the hole stock contributes to calmer and more precise shooting.

However, a disadvantage of the hole stock is that threading the thumb into the hole stock takes a bit more time than gripping a normal pistol grip.

This means that it takes a bit longer to cycle and take a second shot with repeaters.

Hole stocks can be installed on repeaters as well as on break-action rifles.

Outside of hunting use, hole stocks are especially popular among sport and precision shooters.
