Basic Requirements for the Acquisition of Handguns by Hunters
Hunters are generally allowed to own up to two handguns according to firearms law. Unlike long guns, a valid annual hunting license alone is not sufficient for the acquisition of a handgun. Instead, a pre-entry in the green firearms ownership card (WBK) is mandatory.
Pre-entry and its Conditions
To acquire a handgun, the hunter must apply for a pre-entry at the responsible firearms authority. This is done by presenting the WBK and the valid annual hunting license. It is mandatory to specify the type of weapon (pistol or revolver) as well as the caliber of the desired weapon in the pre-entry. The pre-entry remains valid for one year, during which time the weapon must be acquired. It is not permitted to acquire a different weapon than the one registered or in a different caliber.
Consequences of Errors in Firearm Acquisition
Errors in the acquisition process can have serious consequences, as they may constitute a violation of firearms law. This can lead to the loss of firearms reliability and even the revocation of the hunting license.
Use and Transport of Handguns
Handguns can be used for various hunting purposes, such as the finishing shot on game or the taking of predatory animals. The choice of caliber should be adjusted according to the hunted game: A large caliber is recommended for heavy game, while a small caliber is better suited for burrowing and trapping.
When transporting to the hunt or shooting range, the handgun must be transported unloaded and secured, separate from the ammunition and in a locked container.
Advantages of Pistol and Revolver
The choice between pistol and revolver depends on personal preferences and the specific hunting situation. Revolvers are often heavier, but they are easier to use and less prone to errors.
