Overview of Scope Mounts

Gunfinder Magazine

Scopes are, alongside the weapon itself, probably the most important tool today for successfully hunting with a bullet or for successfully practicing shooting sports.

To be precise, it is the combination of a precise weapon and a powerful optic that ensures this success. Both are connected by the so-called scope mount. Over the years, however, not just one type of mount for scopes has established itself, but many different systems have proven themselves for various types of weapons and scopes as well as for different uses.

Among the most well-known types of mounts for scopes today are, among others, the EAW mount, the Picatinny rail, the Hexalock mount and the Blaser saddle mount. These different types of mounts also rely on different links between the optic and the weapon. While the EAW swivel mount, for example, usually uses two mounting rings to mount the scope, the Picatinny rail, as the name suggests, relies on a system where two rails are mounted on top of each other using screw clamps. However, there are also various other types of mounts that partially use elements of other mount types in combination.

As already mentioned, the types of mounts can also be chosen depending on the occasion of use. While the Picatinny rail mount is considered very modular and quick to install, the EAW mount is said to have great robustness and precision.

Which type of mount one uses cannot always be decided by oneself. Often, the type of mount is predetermined by the design of the weapon chosen by the manufacturer. When ordering a new weapon from the factory, some manufacturers even allow you to choose a mount variant.

When purchasing a used weapon, one usually has to live with the fact that the type of mount is predetermined. Here, it is important to ensure that when acquiring a possibly used scope, the scope is compatible with this type of mount.

The costs of the various mounts also differ significantly.

To find the right mount for oneself and one's weapon, one must consider several factors. Usually, over the years, one discovers through trying out many different types which mount one likes for what reason.
