The cartridge chamber - or the chamber - is an essential component of every firearm and is usually located at the rear end of the barrel. Only in the case of revolvers, which typically have several cartridge chambers, are these combined in the cylinder .

The cartridge chamber is always designed according to the caliber (the dimensions) of the cartridge to be used and serves to hold the cartridge inside the weapon immediately before firing. It is closed at the rear by the bolt.
