Schalenwild refers to all wild animals living in the wild that are subject to hunting law and are even-toed ungulates. The hooves are referred to as "Schalen" in hunting terminology.
Schalenwild includes: roe deer, wild boar, fallow deer, red deer, sika deer, chamois, ibex, mouflon, elk, and wisent (European bison).
With the exception of roe deer, all Schalenwild is considered game. Wild boar is special in several respects. First, it is the only species of Schalenwild that is not a ruminant but an omnivore. Second, it cannot be classified as either a bovine or a cervid. Finally, due to the strong population and the imminent threat from African swine fever, there are currently no closed seasons for wild boar in Germany.
Cervids are antlered animals, which include deer and moose. Among cervids, only the males develop antlers as weapons on their foreheads, which are shed throughout the year. Cervids include roe deer, fallow deer, red deer, elk, and sika deer.
In bovids, both male and female animals grow horns, which are not shed but continue to grow throughout their lives. Chamois, ibex, mouflon, and wisent are bovids.
