An ordinary hunting trip in the Spessart takes a dramatic turn when Dirk O.'s loyal companion, the German Longhaired Pointer Harley, unexpectedly falls seriously ill. A few days after the driven hunt, disturbing symptoms appear: loss of appetite, lethargy, and soon thereafter muscle cramps, vomiting, and itching to the point of self-mutilation.

Despite immediate veterinary care, the worst suspicion is confirmed: an infection with the Aujeszky virus, a rare but deadly disease for which there is neither a vaccine nor a cure.
