An everyday hunting trip in the Spessart takes a dramatic turn when Dirk O.'s faithful companion, the German long-haired dog Harley, unexpectedly falls seriously ill. A few days after the driven hunt, worrying symptoms appear: Loss of appetite, lethargy, and soon afterwards muscle cramps, vomiting and itching to the point of self-mutilation.
Despite immediate veterinary care, the worst suspicions were confirmed: an infection with the Aujeszky's virus, a rare but fatal disease for which there is neither a vaccination nor a rescue.
