In a conical barrel, the inner diameter of the barrel tapers, the bullet, which has special grooves or rings, is compressed to a smaller diameter than the initial diameter. Due to the initially high base area, the bullet is accelerated to a very high velocity and has an extremely high penetrating power.

Conical barrels do not play a role in hunting, and the concept has not been pursued in the military sector since the 1960s.
