Caliber 12/70

Gunfinder Magazine

The shot caliber 12, or 12/70, is the most common shot caliber in Germany. Other calibers widely used in Germany are 16 and 20, which are nowadays hardly sold in Germany.

The barrel diameter in this caliber corresponds to 18.53 mm, and the length of a fired shot cartridge is 70 mm.

"12" here corresponds to the diameter of one of 12 bullets of the same size, if they were formed from an English pound of lead (453.6 g). Thus, the barrel diameter of the 12-gauge is larger than that of the 16- and 20-gauge.

Although the 12-gauge has by far the widest distribution, the expansion of the shot grain is not dependent on the caliber but on the choke. The smaller calibers 16 and 20 can be a pleasant alternative to shoot, especially for beginners, due to lower recoil and less loud bang.
