The Right Hunting Knife

Gunfinder Magazine

It is probably the most important tool of the hunter besides the hunting weapon and helps in many situations around the practice of hunting - the hunting knife. Its main area of use remains, besides catching, the processing of the game and the butchering of the venison. Especially in these tasks, the hunter must repeatedly make precise cuts to only sharpen the parts he wants to sharpen and, especially when gutting, to avoid sharpening parts of the entrails from which contaminating substances can leak out. Here, precision work is required, and for that, the right tool is needed.

Hunting knives must fit well in the hand. Many are therefore designed with indentations in the blade where the hunter can place his fingers to guide only parts of the blade cleanly through the game body. A typical feature of hunting knives is also a convex or concave curve towards the tip. They are referred to as Drop-Point and Clip-Point blades. All blade shapes have in common that they are straight. Knives with serrated edges are unsuitable for hunting as they would practically tear the meat apart and thus destroy the venison. Hunting knives specifically designed for gutting often feature a so-called "guthook". This allows for effortless gutting of the abdominal wall without risking noise and damaging the entrails. For removing the entrails and butchering the venison, one can also rely on classic butcher knives.

It is also important for hunting knives that they are robust and made of stainless and solid steel. Hard steel types and carbon steel are recommended as they stay sharp longer and can be easily sharpened again. The thick hide and bristles of wild boar can pose a challenge for a hunting knife blade. Therefore, it is important to keep the knife sharp at all times.

Furthermore, the hunting knife must be maintained, just like almost all other essential equipment: it should be well protected during transport. Usually, a leather sheath or case tailored to the knife is included in the delivery. Especially when carried in a classic leather sheath readily available on the belt, the hunting knife also looks visually appealing. However, less traditional nylon or plastic sheaths can also protect the knife and especially its edge well against external influences and damage.

In the end, it is important that you acquire a knife that you enjoy working with and that has all the features that are important to you.
