Short gun barrel

Gunfinder Magazine

Short rifle barrels are practical, the rifle is lighter and more guideable during movement hunts. However, a short barrel can also be very advantageous in the pulpit during quiet raised hide hunting: If game approaches from an unexpected direction, it is easier to align yourself in its direction without getting stuck somewhere with the long, bulky weapon - every hunter knows it when he turns around while sitting game, tries to be as quiet as possible to then bump loudly against the pulpit with the barrel or the stock.

However, a long barrel also has its advantages: The rifle's center of gravity shifts forward more easily and the rifle can be held more steady. More importantly, however, with certain calibers and certain loadings, the ignition effect of the ammunition only develops if the barrel is long enough. This is because the propellant charge needs a certain amount of time to burn off completely. If, due to the short barrel, the projectile leaves the muzzle before the propellant charge has completely burned off, these powder gases can no longer act on the projectile: it is comparatively slow, the muzzle energy is comparatively low and the gas pressure is quite high. Therefore, the muzzle blast is louder with short barrels than with long ones, the muzzle flash is stronger and the recoil is greater due to the lower weight of the weapon. Short barrels have an influence on the precision only from approx. 45 cm length (here the data of the manufacturers vary). If the barrel is too short, the quality cannot be guaranteed.

The main use of short barreled rifles is tracking. The use of rifles for driven hunts.
