The great advantage of silencers is that they also protect the hearing of dogs, fellow hunters and drivers from the muzzle blast. In addition, putting on the hearing protection is often forgotten in the hunting zeal - with the silencer, the protection is always active.
The safety precautions for the ear are considerable, because a hunting rifle can reach, depending on the caliber inen sound pressure level of up to 170 decibels. Thus, the level of the sound is well above the limit of about 137 which is sufficient to cause irreparable damage to hearing.
By using a silencer, the bullet sound can be reduced by up to 35 decibels. This sounds like an insignificant reduction, but it should be remembered that a noise increased by 10 decibels sounds twice as loud.
The amount of attenuation depends on the caliber, labbing and barrel length of the firearm, as well as the size and design of the silencer.
By lowering the sound of the bullet, hearing protection can be dispensed with in most cases.
Other advantages:
- Reduction of muzzle blast
- hearing protection of hunter, driver and dog
- reduced recoil
- reduced muzzle flash
- cannot be "forgotten" when shooting
- unchanged directional hearing (in contrast to hearing protectors)
- increased precision, because gases that would catch up and destabilize the bullet without silencer are deflected
Buying a silencer used:
If you're looking to buy a silencer used, you can use our Gunfinder search to get an idea of price levels on the major platforms EGun, Auctronia and the VDB. Silencers are designed for a lifetime performance of 7000 - 9000 rounds, a number of shots that is probably exceeded by few hunters.
It is much more important to make sure that the silencer has been properly maintained:
If present, the muffler cover must be removed before storage, as corrusion can easily form underneath; for the same reason, it must also be unscrewed from the rifle and preferably stored horizontally.
If the damper has steel lamellas, it should always be sprayed with oil for corrosion protection in addition to dry storage.
Provided they have been properly stored and cared for, there is nothing wrong with used mufflers. Before first use, make sure that the gun with the silencer must be re-fired.
