Autumn is for many hunters the main season for hunting and is usually mainly in the sign of driven hunts. Hunting ducks on ponds, streams and lakes in the so-called duck - or goose dash offers a welcome change. However, the right equipment is essential for this:
Shotgun
In most regions the most important piece of equipment of the hunter after the rifle, in some places even the most important, is the shotgun. Shotguns are mostly offered as double shotguns (cross shotguns), buck shotguns and as self-loading shotguns. Self-loading shotguns are very practical, but are not popular for traditional society hunts. Our recommendation is to use them for crow hunting. Traditional cross and buck shotguns are the optimal companions for duck hunting and are available used and in reasonable condition already for a few hundred Euros. Important: In many federal states steel shot is now mandatory. Steel shotguns are marked with the "lily"..
Shotgun ammunition:
In addition to the correct caliber, it is important to note whether the use of steel shot is mandatory in the particular hunting area. Lead-free ammunition is explicitly marked as such on the packaging. It is also important that the ammunition has the correct shot size, i.e. that the individual shot balls have the correct diameter. The shot size can be indicated by a number, whereby the smaller the number, the larger the shot size: Shot size 1 in the international standard system corresponds to a shot diameter of 4.0 millimeters, shot size 9 corresponds to a diameter of 2.0 millimeters. It gets even more confusing because there are several different size systems from manufacturer to manufacturer. We strongly recommend paying attention to the indication of the diameter of the shot grains.
Depending on the game, shot of the following diameters should be used (according to a recommendation of the DJV):
- 2.5 mm: rabbit, partridge, snipe, pigeon.
- 3.0 mm: Hares in autumn bellows, pheasant, wild duck
- 3.5 mm: Hare in winter bellows, wild goose
There are also shot cartridges made of cardboard and plastic. Cardboard shells are more environmentally friendly, but they are more sensitive to moisture, which is a natural part of duck shooting. The differences in the material do not affect the hit pattern.
Cartridge belt
Cartridge belts are more practical than bags. Besides the fact that the cartridges can be drawn faster, they have the advantage that they can be sorted. If you carry shotgun shells, the risk of confusing them with the shotgun shells is much lower, provided they have their fixed place in the cartridge belt.
Camouflage clothing
The clothing for duck shooting must be able to withstand various challenges. Because of the autumn temperatures, it must keep warm, but most importantly, you must be able to move around without restriction and without making noise. For the duck stroke also very important: your camouflage effect!
Decoys, decoys and other equipment
The volume of a shotgun blast can easily exceed 130 decibels. This is well beyond the limit at which permanent hearing damage can occur. Therefore, when hunting with a shotgun should not be without hearing protection.
It is recommended to use artificial decoys especially for hunting flying game: Especially crows, pigeons and ducks can increase the hunting success in combination with the appropriate decoy.
