The hunter refers to the shot with which he kills seriously injured or not immediately fatally shot game as a catch shot. This shot is often taken at the end of a hunt or when the game has had an accident. It serves the purpose of putting the animal out of its misery and causing immediate and painless death by penetration of the bullet into the brain stem.
Short-barreled rifles in particular are used by hunters in Germany as trap guns, since the trap shot is usually fired from close range.
Popular calibers for the catch shot are, for example, .22 lfB, because it is sufficiently strong to kill immediately in the case of a predatory shot, and on the other hand it does not devalue the bellows. For the catch shot on cloven-hoofed game (especially shot-hard sows), the strongest possible calibers are recommended, such as.38 Special, .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum.
