Big game refers primarily to particularly strong and physically large game in the German-speaking world, which can primarily be found on the African continent, as well as in Eastern European and North Asian regions, but also in North America. The term big game is by no means a zoological technical term, but rather a term used to classify game that surpasses the native large game species. Classic big game species include: bison, bears, moose, as well as lions, buffalo, giraffes, and even elephants.
Big game hunting is often associated with the traditional term safari and is repeatedly a public topic of debate, as some big game species are considered endangered and/or worthy of protection.
To ethically hunt big game, stronger projectiles and thus larger calibers are required. A so-called suitable large caliber for big game hunting is generally referred to as having a bullet diameter of 0.375 inch (9.53 mm) or larger.
