Ammunition Shortage in Europe

The first major highlight of the current hunting season has already passed with the buck hunt - and with the leaf time, the next one is just around the corner. Before the main hunting season for red deer begins in August, and the fields must be protected from wild boar, now is a good time to replenish ammunition stocks.

Unfortunately, many hunters are facing the problem that their ammunition is currently unavailable or has extremely long delivery times, both with their usual hunting dealers and online retailers. Many hunters wonder if the war in Ukraine is the reason for the empty ammunition depots. According to insiders in the industry, this is not the case; rather, the supply chains and goods flows have been disrupted for a long time. Increased demand in the US market is also affecting the European market - not only are products from American manufacturers like Barnes or Federal Ammunition almost impossible to obtain, but European manufacturers like S&B or RWS are also hard to come by.

The increased demand initially affected internationally sought-after calibers like .308 Win or .30-06 Spr, but now nearly all calibers are affected by the ammunition shortage. The reason for this is that the components of ammunition such as primers, powder, and projectiles are affected by the shortage, and not just the immediately usable factory ammunition. Therefore, reloaders are also affected by the shortage.

No relaxation is expected in the European market this year. Therefore, it is advisable to stock up on ammunition if it is available.

Where can I find ammunition now?
