In the team game Airsoft, players from two or more teams compete against each other, shooting at each other with Airsoft weapons. However, it is not solely about eliminating the other team. Instead, there are various game modes in which the teams pursue different objectives. Below is a brief overview of the most common variants:
Force on Force
The Force on Force variant is the most popular game mode and is also known as FOF or Team Deathmatch. The name of the variant may vary depending on the playing field. In Force on Force, two or more teams compete against each other, and hit players must return to the Respawn Point. Depending on the agreement, players can often be hit and restart - this is referred to as Respawn. The team that has been hit the least, measured by respawns, wins. The Force on Force variant is very straightforward and is also well-suited as a warm-up and to familiarize oneself with the playing field.
Elimination
The game Elimination proceeds like the Force on Force variant, but the number of respawns is limited. The game ends when a team has no active players left on the field because each player's respawns have been used up. It resembles game variants of dodgeball or other games - a player is eliminated when they have no more "lives" left.
Medic
Medic operates just like the two previously mentioned variants, but each team has its own medic. The player in this role has very little weaponry and a limited ammunition supply, but they can "heal" hit players, allowing them to continue playing. To do this, the medic must reach the hit person. If the medic is eliminated, healing can no longer occur. The team that "survives" the longest wins.
Capture the Flag
In Capture the Flag, two teams compete against each other and try to capture the flag or flags of the opposing team. Once the flag is captured, it must be brought back to the team's own base. However, the flags cannot be hidden and must be placed in a specific area visible to everyone. While a flag is being transported to the team's own base, it must be carried openly so that every player is aware of its status. If the person carrying the flag is shot during this time, they must of course drop the flag. There are two variants of Capture the Flag - "Live Flag" and "Dead Flag". In Live Flag, if the flag bearer is hit, they must leave the flag at the spot where they are and release it, while in Dead Flag, they must carry it back to the opposing base.
Bomb Demolition
In this popular game variant, there are two bases and a "bomb". The bomb is placed between the two bases. The players of both teams try to bring the bomb to one of the opposing bases. If successful, the bomb must remain there for 5 minutes, or for an agreed period, without being touched by the opponent. If this is achieved, the team that has eliminated the opposing base wins. Bomb Demolition is thus the reverse variant of Capture the Flag.
Escort
In the game "Escort", one team must escort an unarmed player to a specific location. The other teams try to prevent this. The escort team wins if they can successfully complete the escort, while the other teams win if they can eliminate the player being escorted.
King of Hill
The game King of Hill is very popular for concluding an Airsoft game day. A portion of the players barricades themselves on a hill or in a relatively open area of a playing field. The other players then try to take this hill and raise a flag there.
In all game modes, fairness is of course the top priority. Additionally, an assault rifle is generally the best choice, as it is universal for all game modes and roles (medic and escorted person in the respective games excluded).
