What is a Credit Card Knife?

A credit card knife is a small, foldable knife in the size of a credit card. When folded, it has the dimensions of a credit card and can be carried in a wallet. The casing of the card, which protects the blade, serves as the handle. The blade is fixed in the open position. The knife is very handy and small, can be carried anywhere, and is therefore very suitable for everyday use or outdoor activities. However, there are repeated speculations from various sources that credit card knives should be banned - after all, they can be easily concealed when folded. Additionally, the quality of the blade is often questioned.

Are Credit Card Knives Banned?

Whether credit card knives are banned can be answered by looking at the Weapons Act. If they were banned, they would have to be classified as prohibited weapons.

The knives are not intended by their nature to eliminate or reduce the offensive or defensive capabilities of people. Credit card knives are also not cutting or thrusting weapons. Due to their design, handling, and mode of action, they are also not suitable for eliminating or reducing the offensive or defensive capabilities of people.

Credit card knives are not considered weapons in the sense of the Weapons Act - and therefore cannot be classified as prohibited weapons.

Credit card knives are utility knives, similar to a tool. For knives with a fixed blade, the regulation still applies that the blade length must not exceed 12 cm for the knife to be carried in public. Due to their format, a credit card knife cannot reach this blade length. The credit card format measures:  8.6 x 5.4 cm.

Credit card knives are therefore not banned

What Can You Use Credit Card Knives For?

The credit card knife is smaller than a pocket knife and fits in any wallet or purse. It can always be carried with you. Good credit card knives are naturally particularly sturdy and are therefore never the first choice - in terms of quality, they are comparable to a utility knife. However, the knives are very inexpensive and are well-suited as a backup. In terms of use, the knife is good for camping and for cutting on the go - for example, fruits and vegetables.
