HIKMICRO presents new FALCON thermal imaging devices

Gunfinder Magazine

HIKMICRO presents a new series of highly modern thermal imaging devices, the new FALCON series, which will replace the OWL series, at the end of September 2022. There will be four different models: FH25, FH35, FQ35, and FQ50.

The models are characterized by new detectors that ensure significantly improved image quality. Additionally, the models have been adapted in design and construction to meet the wishes and requirements of hunters in practice.

As a preliminary note on quality: HIKMICRO manufactures all sensors and other components in-house; only the lenses are purchased externally.

Differences between the individual HIKMICRO Falcon models

Example FQ35: The F stands for Falcon, the H and Q for the detector size, and the subsequent number for the front lens. The detector size is H 384x288, 12µm or Q 640x512, 12µm, depending on the designation.

The FQ35 thus has a detector with a resolution of 640x512, 12µm, and a 35mm front lens.

FH25

The FH24 is the entry-level model with a 25mm lens. In terms of price, it is the most affordable model in the Falcon series and is suitable for hunting at medium distances. It is particularly well-suited for quick detection in the forest.

FH35/FQ35

The FH35/FQ35 differ in terms of the detector, with the FQ35 having the more powerful detector. Both devices are excellent mid-range solutions and true all-rounders for any hunting situation, whether hunting in the field or in the forest.

FQ50

The premium model of the Falcon series with the large detector and the largest lens. The FQ50 excels especially at long distances, such as hunting in the field or, for example, mountain hunting.

Innovations of the HIKMICRO Falcon series

Shape and design

The Falcon series is no longer teardrop-shaped but designed in a cylindrical shape. The housing is made of durable magnesium with a thick, very rubberized coating. This makes the device very robust and gives a high-quality impression. It traditionally features four buttons for zoom, menu navigation, photo button, and on/off.

Furthermore, the suspension of the device has been improved. In previous models and thermal imaging devices from other manufacturers, the suspension for the carrying strap is mounted in the middle, causing the device to dangle while being carried. In the new models, the suspension is located closer to the eyepiece, allowing the device to rest quietly on the chest when slung.

Replaceable batteries

For the first time, the Falcon series from HIKMICRO features replaceable batteries. Previously, these were integrated, as with most manufacturers. The classic 18650 batteries are used in many devices and are easily available. Very practical: the device can simply continue to be used after a battery change. If the battery is defective, the device does not need to be sent in; it can be easily replaced by the user. HIKMICRO provides two batteries as standard. The performance of a battery lasts about 5-7 hours, depending on the model.

New sensor in HIKMICRO Falcon

The sensors used in the Falcon series were newly developed specifically for the Falcon series and achieve a NETD value of 20 for the first time. This value indicates how many mini-Kelvin differences the device can detect and display. The smaller this value, the more sensitive the sensor is in representing temperature differences.

Examples from practice: With the new FALCON devices, differences can be recognized better. Even with small temperature differences, relevant details are displayed. For example, the devices can also detect the antlers of a roebuck, which is not or only very poorly possible with most thermal imaging devices because the temperature of the antlers hardly differs from the outside temperature.
