Dentler, known so far primarily for excellent scope mounts, presented its latest development at the JAGD & HUND fair in Dortmund: the DR 21. A first glance and test of the modular straight-pull repeater reveal: Innovation is at play here!
In the competitive market of hunting weapons, true innovations are a rarity. All the more attention was drawn to Dentler's announcement, a company from Swabia, to unveil its own hunting weapon at the JAGD & HUND fair in Dortmund. Until now, the South Germans were mainly known for their precise scope mounts.
Unique Design
The DR21 is characterized by its modular design. The magazine is unusually located behind the trigger, making the weapon exceptionally compact with an overall length of only 87 cm. Changing the bolt head can be done without tools in seconds. For barrel changes, only loosening a screw on the stock is required – a process that takes less than three minutes. A significant advantage is the integrated Dentler mount on the barrel, which effectively minimizes point of impact deviations, as the mount and barrel form a unit.
Innovative Cocking System
Particularly noteworthy is the innovative hand cocking system, which differs from the traditional cocking lever. The DR 21 features a hand cocking mechanism directly on the pistol grip, activated by the pressure of the thumb pad – an intuitive mechanism that automatically cocks the weapon system when gripped and relaxes when released. The magazine capacity is impressive, with space for five cartridges in .308 Win caliber.
Optics
Visually, the DR 21 differs from classic hunting rifles due to its unique construction, which may initially meet with reservations from traditionalists. Nevertheless, with the growing acceptance of camouflage patterns, sporty stock designs, and more, it could certainly find its target audience. Despite a recommended retail price of around €5,000 for the standard version – comparable to other premium straight-pull repeaters – the DR 21 could be convincing.
The DR 21 shows visual parallels to the grip repeaters from Sommer & Ockenfuß, especially regarding the safety and hand cocking system on the grip. However, both weapon designs are fundamentally different.
In summary, Dentler brings an innovative and exciting new model to the hunting weapon market with the DR 21. It remains to be seen how it will perform in practice.
