Paintball (also known as "Gotcha") is a team sport where players from opposing teams shoot each other with paintballs - which in paintball jargon is called "marking". The paintballs are usually made of a gelatin shell filled with food coloring or colored polyethylene glycol. When a player is hit, they are out of the current round, although there are many game modes. Among the most popular
The most important piece of equipment is the so-called marker, which is used to shoot the paintballs. Additionally, a paintball mask is an absolute must for anyone who wants to play paintball. The mask provides protection for the entire face, especially the eyes are reliably protected by the shatterproof lenses. Lastly, thick, padded clothing is recommended, which allows freedom of movement, is easy to clean, and still offers protection from the paintballs. If paintballs hit bare skin from a short distance, bruises or even lacerations can result.
The marker is used to shoot the paintballs. The marker is a compressed air gun that was originally used by forestry workers and cattle herders to mark trees and livestock. The marker typically consists of four parts: the actual marker, the hopper (also called Loader or Hopper) for the paintballs, the barrel, and the gas system with a compressed air tank and pressure regulator.
In international sports, paintballs reach a speed of 300 feet/second at the muzzle of the marker, which is about 90 m/s. However, on most paintball fields, only a speed of about 85 m/s is allowed, which is just over 300 km/h. Due to this high speed, paintballs can cause significant irreparable damage to unprotected faces, especially to the eyes. Therefore, it is very important to wear a paintball mask.
For safety reasons and due to weapon regulations, paintball can only be played in designated paintball fields or paintball arenas.
As mentioned above, it is not permitted to play paintball outside of designated arenas or fields. On one hand, the very fast projectiles pose a significant danger to bystanders, which is why it is also not allowed to shoot with paintball guns on private property without permission.
However, a more important rule is that paintball markers are subject to weapon laws. They are marked with an “F in a pentagon” and have a muzzle energy of up to 7.5 Joules. They can be sold freely to those aged 18 and over, but may not be carried in public - this includes abandoned areas or forests.
The most common caliber of markers is .68 (17.3 mm).
