Kaliber 8x57 IS

Gunfinder Magazine

The caliber 8 x 57 IS (for "Infantry Pointed") is one of the most widely used calibers in Germany, following the calibers .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester. In both World Wars, it was the standard caliber of the German military.

Advantages of the caliber include a relatively gentle shooting behavior, low game meat destruction with few bruises in the game body, and the performance reserves are sufficient even for large red deer. Thus, 8 x 57 IS is an all-round caliber and is approved for all ungulates in Germany.

It is recommended for use up to 180 m. As a driven hunt caliber, 8 x 57 IS is very popular.

In direct comparison to the two Anglo-Saxon calibers (assuming comparable loading), projectiles in caliber 8 x 57 deliver slightly more energy to the target than .308 because the mass in 8 x 57 IS is somewhat higher, but the speed is below that of projectiles in caliber .30-06.

Due to its versatile applications, 8 x 57 IS is excellently suitable for young hunters.
