The 8 x 57 IS caliber (for "Infanterie Spitz") is one of the most widely used calibers in Germany after the .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester . It was the standard caliber of the German military during the two World Wars.
The caliber's advantages include relatively smooth shooting behavior, low game destruction with few hematomas in the game body, and the power reserves are nevertheless sufficient even for capital red deer. This makes 8 x 57 IS an all-round caliber and approved for all cloven-hoofed game in Germany.
It is recommended for use up to 180 m. As a driven hunt caliber , 8 x 57 IS is very popular.
In direct comparison to the two Anglo-Saxon calibers (assuming comparable laboratory), bullets in 8 x 57 caliber bring somewhat more energy to the target than .308 because the mass of 8 x 57 IS is somewhat higher, but the velocity is lower than that of bullets in .30-06 caliber.
Because of its versatility, 8 x 57 IS is an excellent choice for young hunters.
