The .222 Remington caliber (metric: 5.6 x 53 mm) is a very fast and accurate small caliber cartridge. It is particularly suitable for foxes, hares and, unlike other cartridges of the .22 group, is approved for roe deer, as it does not fall below the minimum requirement of 1000 joules at 100 meters shooting distance.
If, as in many small game areas, mainly roe deer are to be hunted, this caliber is recommended, because it combines both low game score and high precision.
Weaknesses in roe deer hunting, however, lie in the fact that the effectiveness of the shot decreases considerably at a distance of more than 100 meters. Tracking is sometimes difficult because the bullets tend to release all their energy into the game body. This means there is often no rejection and thus little sweat output. Finally, shooters must be extremely careful not to have any obstacles in the field of fire. Even a blade of grass can dangerously deflect the lightweight .222 Rem caliber bullet.
The .222 Remington has lost popularity to the .223 Remington.
