The caliber .223 Remington (also 5.56 x 45 mm) is a very fast medium cartridge (i.e., performance-wise situated between short and long gun calibers). The cartridge is also referred to as 5.56 × 45 mm NATO and is the standard caliber of most Western assault rifles. The G36 assault rifle from Heckler & Koch, the standard weapon of the Bundeswehr, also comes in this caliber by default. However, the military version of the ammunition should not be fired from civilian weapons due to the higher gas pressure.
Militarily, the main criteria for caliber selection are high velocity and the resulting extended trajectory.
In hunting, it is primarily used for hunting predatory game and roe deer; for larger game, the caliber is not permitted in Germany. Regarding its hunting use, the .223 Remington has displaced the slightly smaller cartridge .222 Remington (5.56 x 43 mm).
