The .223 Remington caliber (also 5.56 × 45 mm) is a very high velocity medium caliber (i.e., intermediate between short and long rifle calibers in terms of performance). The cartridge is also called 5.56 × 45 mm NATO and is the standard caliber of most Western assault rifles. Heckler & Koch's G36 assault rifle, the German Army's ordnance weapon, also comes in this caliber as standard. However, the military version of the ammunition should not be fired from civilian weapons due to the higher gas pressure.
From a military point of view, high velocity and the resulting elongated trajectory are decisive criteria for the choice of caliber.
In hunting, it is used primarily for predatory game and roe deer; the caliber is not approved for larger cloven-hoofed game in Germany. In terms of its hunting use, the .223 Remington displaced the somewhat smaller .222 Remington cartridge(5.56 x 43 mm).
