The .22 Hornet cartridge is a centerfire cartridge very popular among hunters for hunting predatory game and larger feathered game such as geese. The caliber with metric dimensions (5.7 x 35 mm) is not approved for hunting deer in Germany because the bullet energy at a distance of 100 m does not reach the minimum required 1,000 joules.
The cartridge is primarily fired from combined weapons such as triplets, Bergstutzen or Bockbüchsflinten with insert barrel , because pure rifles are quite limited in this caliber. Nevertheless, pure .22 Hornet rifles are also offered.
The .22 Hornet has excellent characteristics that give the cartridge its popularity:
First, it can be fired almost recoilless, especially from heavy triplets, where an insert barrel usually converts one of the two shot barrels. At the same time, for its size, it has a very high velocity of up to 800 m/s with low noise generation, which also predestines it for use in places where the sound of gunfire is particularly disturbing. Last but not least is the high precision. The .22 Hornet can be fired with high precision at 150 meters.
These characteristics make it superior to the alternative.22 lfB.
