The .243 Winchester caliber (6.17 × 51 mm) is a centerfire cartridge that was introduced to the market in 1955 for hunting deer and predatory game. The cartridge is based on the.308 Winchester caliber (7.62 x 51 mm).
The bullet weight of the usual loads is usually between about 60 and 100 grains. The caliber usually has a very high muzzle velocity of over 1000 m/s and is still very accurate at distances beyond 300 m, which makes it well suited for mountain hunting. Authorities sometimes use the caliber in "small caliber" precision rifles.
