When buying and selling weapons, it is essential to know the necessary documents that authorize trading. These requirements are not always clear and vary depending on the group:
Hunters
Hunting License: Hunters must always possess a valid hunting license.
Firearm Ownership Card: A firearm ownership card is not always required. Hunters can only apply for this once they own a gun cabinet and can prove ownership of a weapon. Therefore, when purchasing their first weapon, hunters do not yet have a firearm ownership card, but it will be issued to them as soon as they acquire their first weapon.
Sport Shooters:
Firearm Ownership Card: Sport shooters typically receive a yellow firearm ownership card. However, under certain circumstances, such as owning a semi-automatic weapon or a handgun, they may also be issued a green firearm ownership card.
Collectors:
Firearm Ownership Card: Collectors typically receive a red firearm ownership card.
Additional Notes:
The color of the firearm ownership card may vary depending on specific circumstances and requirements. This color coding helps differentiate the permissions and the type of allowed weapons.
The rules for acquiring weapons and the required proof of authorization can be complex. The following table aims to help understand the required documents for hunters, sport shooters, and collectors.

Permissions
The firearm ownership cards authorize the possession of the weapons listed therein, but not for carrying them in public. Only those who possess a firearm license may carry weapons in public.
Hunters are allowed to carry weapons in the hunting area and at the shooting range according to § 13 (6) of the Weapons Act, and also in connection with these activities not ready to fire, for example, on the way from home to the hunting area or to the shooting range.
Acquisition Authorizations for Online Purchases
When acquiring weapons and ammunition, the respective acquisition authorization must be presented.
Online, the presentation is not clearly regulated. One option is to send the acquisition authorization or an officially certified copy by post to the respective seller. However, this involves increased effort, as the document must also be returned.
Some dealers also accept a scan, but there is a risk that scans can be forged. A method recommended by us, which involves little effort, is to verify the authenticity of the documents with the issuing authority. However, the owner must grant the authority the right to confirm the validity of the document to third parties.
