The case is often a padded, long bag for transporting sports and hunting weapons. The law requires that cases be lockable, and it is sufficient if the zipper can be secured with a padlock or cable tie.
On the way to the shooting range and into the hunting area, hunters are not required to secure the case with a lock. This is literally stated in §13 (6) of the Weapons Act: “A hunter may carry hunting weapons for authorized hunting activities, including the preparation and shooting in the hunting area, for training hunting dogs in the hunting area, for hunting protection or for forest protection without permission; he may also carry the hunting weapons not ready to fire without permission in connection with these activities. The shooting of animals subject to nature conservation law is equivalent to authorized hunting activities if the nature conservation exemption or release provides for killing by a hunting license holder.”
“Not ready to fire” means that the weapon and ammunition must be separated - for example, the ammunition must not be in the magazine if it is already in the weapon.
An alternative to the case is the gun case. A gun case is bulkier than a case, but the weapon is often better protected inside because a case is hard and durable on the outside and better padded on the inside.
When transporting long guns, it is important to protect their surfaces from damage, but it is much more important to ensure that the scope and mount are protected from shocks, as otherwise it cannot be guaranteed that the weapon will still hit reliably.
Therefore, a case or a gun case is part of the basic equipment for every young hunter.
