Data, facts & information

Self-loading rifles (also referred to as semi-automatics) are rifles that become ready to fire again automatically after a shot is fired, with a simple pull of the trigger. This is achieved by using the energy from the fired shot to eject the empty cartridge case from the chamber and chamber a new cartridge.

In terms of popularity among hunters, self-loading rifles rank behind bolt-action or break-action rifles. While self-loading rifles allow for a quick second or third shot, theoretically reducing the risk of wounding game, most hunters fear that the ability to take follow-up shots may encourage riskier shots.

In Germany, the magazine capacity of self-loading rifles is legally limited to two, with one cartridge in the chamber - a total of three cartridges may be in the firearm.

Self-loading rifles are becoming increasingly popular for driven hunts on big game, as they offer the significant advantage of being able to deliver a second precise shot very quickly. When using a bolt-action rifle during a driven hunt, the reloading process can disrupt the action of staying on target after the shot and “following through.” This risk is minimized with semi-automatics due to the absence of a reloading process. They are therefore also credited with great “handling.”

The costs for a self-loading rifle vary just as much as with other types of firearms.

Simple self-loading rifles like the Browning BAR MK3 can be found for just over €1000. For “premium” models like the Sauer 303 Synchro XT Gen. 2, you should expect to pay at least three times that amount.

There are also always well-maintained used self-loading rifles available on the market. If you're interested, you can find the right used semi-automatic on Gunfinder.de!

Anyone who has a valid acquisition permit (hunting license for hunters, firearms ownership card for sport shooters) can purchase a self-loading rifle.
